Renting from someone who is themselves a tenant — common for rooms, and legally thinner than it looks.
A subarriendo is a let granted by a tenant rather than the owner. Most room rentals in Spanish cities are effectively this, whether or not anyone uses the word.
It generally requires the owner's written consent, and where that consent does not exist the arrangement is precarious: your position depends on a head tenancy you are not party to and cannot see.
This is also the arrangement most likely to leave you without a contract in your own name, which is where the padrón problem starts.
What to check in the contract
Ask whether the person letting to you is the owner. If not, ask to see the owner's written consent to sublet — a refusal to show it is itself information.
