Why the calendar is always empty

The appointment system does not hold a rolling queue you can join. Each office releases batches of slots into the booking site, and in the high-demand provinces those batches are taken within minutes of appearing.

So the empty calendar you are looking at is not a bug and it is not personal. It is the normal state between releases, and refreshing it at a random hour on a random day mostly samples the gaps.

This is also why the advice you have been given conflicts. Everyone who succeeded did so at a particular office on a particular morning, and generalised from one data point.

The honest limit of what anyone can tell you

You will find pages claiming to know the exact hour each province releases slots. Treat them with suspicion, and treat ours the same way: we are not publishing a release timetable, because there is no official one to publish.

Release patterns are not announced, they are not documented, and they change. What circulates as fact is inference from forum reports, which goes stale quietly and is then repeated for years.

The legitimate routes, in the order worth trying

None of these is a trick. They are the ordinary paths, listed by how often they resolve the problem.

The resale market, and how to recognise it

There is a real business in appointments that are free. It started with locutorios charging around €10 to make the booking for you, and grew into automated capture and resale at prices that reached €400 in Madrid.

The worse version is the fake one. Victims have paid €300–€1,000 for confirmations that do not exist in the system, and have found out at the counter. A National Police arrest in Barcelona in August 2026 involved fake tickets sold at €67.50 each.

The distinction that matters is what you are paying for. A gestor or lawyer charging a professional fee to handle your file is a normal service. Someone charging you for the slot itself is selling you a free public appointment, and possibly a fictional one.

• The appointment is free through official channels, so any price attached to the slot itself is the warning
• Ask what the fee covers: advice and paperwork is a service, “I have a cita” is a resale
• Insist on the confirmation arriving in your own name, in your own email, from the official system
• A guaranteed date, in a province where the calendar is empty, is the single strongest red flag
• Payment by transfer to a personal account, or in cash at a locutorio, matches the pattern in the prosecuted cases

What you can do while you wait

The appointment is a gate for some things and not for others, and people routinely put their whole move on hold for a document that half of it does not require.

Most importantly for anyone reading this from abroad: you do not need the NIE to start looking for somewhere to live. Searching, shortlisting and viewing all happen without it, and the flats worth having do not wait for your paperwork.

What generally does need it is the residency card, a Spanish bank account at most banks, and a formal employment contract. What generally does not is the padrón, viewings, or a rental negotiation.

• Start the property search now: this is the part that competes with other people
• Empadronarse where you can: registration usually accepts a passport, and it is often needed on the way to the TIE anyway
• Assemble the document pack: passport, the correct EX form, proof of the reason for the application, and the paid tasa 790
• Check whether your consulate can do part of the process before you travel
• If you have a start date, tell your employer early, because an empty extranjería calendar is a known and common cause of delay

NIE, TIE, and which one you are queuing for

Two documents with similar names get conflated constantly, and turning up for the wrong trámite costs you the appointment you waited weeks for.

The NIE is a number: your foreigner identification number, used on every official transaction. The TIE is a physical card evidencing your right to reside, and it carries a NIE on it.

The trámite you book differs accordingly, and so does the office handling it. Confirm which one your situation requires before you book rather than after.
